| Q: What is BBUK Broadband? |
|
| A: BBUK Broadband uses
ADSL technology provided by BT to convert your
normal telephone line into a fast digital line,
bringing you all the joys of high-speed Internet
access - at our lowest monthly fee yet. |
|
|
|
| Q: What are the key
benefits/features of BBUK Broadband? |
|
| A: BBUK Broadband provides
an instant connection - there is no waiting for
a modem to dial-up. It is flexible - you can make
or receive a telephone call on your standard analogue
connection (PSTN) whilst online. You will continue
to be billed in the normal way (rental and call
charges) for your standard (analogue) telephone
service. It is faster - up to 10 times faster
than standard 56K access. It provides access to
content and service providers and the charges
(connection and rental) are paid by easy Standing
Order. |

|
| Q: I frequently download
lots of music tracks and movies - can BBUK Broadband
support this type of use? |
|
A: The BBUK Broadband
service is designed to allow users the capability
of downloading up to about 1Gb of data per day,
or approximately 10,000 images, 650 30 second
videos or 200 music tracks. However, to preserve
download speeds for a majority of customers, BBUK
reserves the right to control or restrict very
heavy usage of the service.

|
| Q: I'm not a BT customer
- how do I get a BT line? |
|
| A: Getting a BT line
couldn't be easier. Just click
here. |
|
|
|
| Q: What sort
of speeds can I expect? |
|
A: BBUK Broadband is
incredibly fast - up to ten times faster than
a normal 56k modem (512k Service). It's also up
to four to five times faster than an ISDN/Home
Highway line. It makes downloading video files,
accessing large email attachments or listening
to music online quick and easy. The speed will
vary a little according to the volume of traffic
at the time you're using it.
You'll also have an instant connection, so there's
no waiting around while you 'log on'. |
|
|
|
| Q: How does
ADSL compare with a Dial-up connection? |
|
A: There are several
differences: ADSL provides a 24-hour a day, 7
day a week connection. The fastest access speeds
currently available through standard analogue
modems are 56.6 Kbps for download (data from the
Internet) and 33.6 Kbps upload (data to the Internet).
Some ADSL services will provide speeds of up to
2Mbits for download and a maximum 256 Kbps upload.
And because you will be connected 24 hours a day,
you don't have to wait while you establish a connection.

|
| Q: Is
it possible to share my USB modem with other PCs? |
|
| A: Yes. A USB
modem can be shared between two or more computers |
|
|
|
| Q: I
have ISDN/Home Highway at the moment, can I upgrade
to BBUK Broadband? |
|
| A: Yes, you can.
We can organise the whole process for you, an
engineer will convert your line to analogue, then
we'll do a line test to see if it can support
BBUK Broadband. If it can't, we'll convert you
straight back to ISDN/Home Highway at no charge.
There may be a conversion charge for this service. |
|
|
|
| Q: Am I charged for the
time my broadband modem or computer is online? |
|
| A: No. When you've
experienced the freedom of being able to use the
Internet 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you'll
wonder how you ever managed without BBUK Broadband. |
|
|
|
| Q: Can I keep and use
my current (non-BBUK) email address and use it
with my BBUK Broadband product? |
|
A: BBUK as standard
provide you with a new email address ending in
@bbuk.net. If you currently have a domain name,
this can be transfered to ourselves. We recommend
adding a domain name to your email, which will
be totally transferable in the future and also
give you multiple email addresses, ie, john@yourfamilyname.co.uk,
anne@yourfamilyname.co.uk.
If you currently use webmail accounts like Hotmail
or Yahoo these will be available through our service.
If you cancel your contract with your ISP, the
ability to send or receive email may be suspended,
or you may be able to receive email via your old
email address but not be able to send it. Some
ISPs do provide email services that can be accessed
from BBUK Broadband. We recommend that you contact
your ISP for information on whether their email
will work or not. |
|
|
|
| Q: Can I host my own website? |
|
A: You can, although
it is not recommended, BBUK Broadband uses ADSL.
This uses an asymmetric path and dynamic addressing,
which is unsuitable for webhosting.
Magnacom offer web hosting plans, see www.mclnetworks.com
for details. |
