| Q: Why are my telephone
calls noisy? |
|
| A: Check that you have
a microfilter plugged into each socket where you
are using a telephone or any other communications
equipment (for example, a fax machine). |
|
|
|
| Q: What is USB? |
|
| A: USB stands for Universal
Serial Bus. It is an industry-wide standard for
connecting computers to peripheral devices. Most
broadband (ADSL) modems connect to computers via
USB and a USB cable is provided for this purpose. |
|
|
|
| Q: Why do I get a USB
bandwidth warning? |
|
A: If you're going
to attach other USB devices, such as a USB mouse,
keyboard or hub, plug them into your computer
before connecting the USB modem. Otherwise, the
pre-attached broadband modem will consume a fixed
bandwidth and the remaining bandwidth will not
be enough for other USB devices. If this is the
case, you will see an error message warning you
that the USB controller bandwidth is exceeded.
The additional USB device may not function properly.
If, for example, your USB modem is attached already
and you need to add an USB mouse to your computer:
unplug the broadband modem to release the bandwidth.
plug the USB mouse to your computer and then re-plug
the broadband modem - it will adjust to use the
remaining bandwidth. |
|
|
|
| Q: I have several devices
that connect to my computer via USB (printer,
scanner, new ADSL modem, digital camera). What
can I do? |
|
| A: USB hubs are now
readily available from high street stores and
allow you to connect more equipment to your computer
via USB. A USB hub connects into a USB socket
on your computer, and you can then plug the devices
into this. |
|
|
|
| Q: Are there
any limits on the number of USB devices I can
connect to my computer when I am using a broadband
modem? |
|
| A: There is a finite
available USB bandwidth that devices use, but
the modem will adapt to make use of the bandwidth
available. If you are going to attach other USB
devices, such as a USB mouse, keyboard or hub,
please plug them into your PC first before connecting
the USB modem. Otherwise, the pre-attached broadband
modem will consume a fixed bandwidth and the remaining
bandwidth will not be enough for other USB devices.
If this is the case, you will see an error message
warning you that the USB controller bandwidth
is exceeded. The additional USB device may not
function properly. For example, your broadband
modem is attached already and you need to add
a USB mouse to your PC. In this case: unplug the
broadband modem to release the bandwidth; plug
the USB mouse to your PC and then re-plug the
modem. The broadband modem will adjust to use
the remaining bandwidth. |

|
| Q: Can I
have another telephone extension running from
the microfilter? |
|
| A: Yes, additional
telephone equipment may be connected using an
approved telephone two-way adaptor. |
|
|
|
| Q: My
connection drops out after a period of time. |
|
| A: Check that
you do not have the 'Disconnect if idle' function
enabled in your Internet browser. To do this in
Internet Explorer, right click on the Internet
Explorer icon on your desktop; Select 'Properties';
Click on the 'Connections' tab at the top and
highlight the connection name you are using; Click
'Settings' (right hand side); Click 'Advanced'
(bottom right hand corner); Make sure the 'Disconnect
if idle' box is not ticked. Click OK. If this
does not resolve the issue it may be that a line
test is required to check the status of the line.

|
| Q: Can
I plug any telephony product into the analogue
line that has BBUK Broadband enabled on it? |
|
| A: Nearly all
analogue equipment will work as normal on the
PSTN (analogue) element of a line enabled for
BBUK Broadband. There are some exceptions, where
incompatibility exists, but this is generally
with older telephony products. BBUK accepts no
liability for this incompatibility as the BBUK
Broadband service is developed to conform to the
relevant standards. |
|
|
|
| Q: The
motherboard on my computer supports USB but my
computer has no USB socket. What can I do? |
|
| A: The necessary
parts can be easily fitted by your local retailer,
or anyone with a grounding in computers. Alternatively,
you can install a PCI-USB converter card in any
spare PCI slot in your computer. These can be
purchased from computer retailers. |
|
|
|
| Q: Can
I run BBUK Broadband and my dial-up connection
from the same computer, at the same time? |
|
| A: You cannot
be connected to the Internet via BBUK Broadband
at the same as being connected via a dial-up connection
(this causes a conflict in the computer memory).
However, you may log off from BBUK Broadband and
connect to the Internet via dial-up in the normal
way, providing you have a suitable dial-up account. |
|
|
|
| Q: Can
I access BBUK Broadband using any modem? |
|
A: BBUK Broadband
requires the use of a broadband (ADSL) modem.
This is different to other types of modems, such
as analogue modems and ISDN Terminal Adapters/PC
cards. You can purchase the required modem from
BBUK at the time you order your BBUK Broadband.
Alternatively, you can obtain one from other suppliers.
The modem must conform to the following software
default settings to be compatible with the BBUK
Broadband product:
RFC 2364: PPP over ATM (PPP over ATM);
VCMux Encapsulation;
ADSL Standard Compliance: ITU-T G.992.1 (G.DMT)
(default) |

|
|
| Q: Which
modem do I get with BBUK Broadband? |
|
| A: The MagnaCom-supplied
broadband modem is the Zoom 5510 ADSL USB Modem. |
|
|
|
| Q: What
might affect the performance of my ADSL or telephony? |
|
A: Performance
may be affected by:
incorrect number of the microfilters
old or incorrect extension wiring
old or low quality telephones |
|
|
|
| Q: How
many telephony devices can I have on my line? |
|
| A: Each telephony
device has a REN (Ringing Equivalent Number) value,
which should be shown on the underside of the
device. The line will support a total REN of 4. |
