| Q: Is it easy to order
BBUK Broadband? |
|
| A: We've made BBUK
Broadband easy to order, easy to install and easy
to use after installation. It will only take about
five minutes to order. |
|
|
|
| Q: How are the modem
and microfilters delivered? |
|
| A: The broadband modem
pack is delivered by Parcelforce and requires
a signature when it arrives (you can tell us which
address you'd like the pack delivered to when
you order). The BBUK Broadband modem pack is sent
out to arrive the day prior to your line being
activated. |
|
|
|
| Q: What is the contract
term for BBUK Broadband? |
|
| A: The BBUK Broadband
contract has a minimum contract term of 3 months
starting from the date of activation. This allows
us to provide BBUK Broadband services at a competitive
price level. |
|
|
|
| Q: Will you provide
support for broadband equipment purchased from
MagnaCom? |
|
| A: Should you have
problems installing the broadband equipment, technical
help is available. Modem installation support
is also provided on the CD-ROM that you will receive
with the BBUK Broadband Welcome Pack. |
|
|
|
| Q: Do I have
to install the modem drivers before I plug the
modem into my PC? |
|
| A: This varies from
modem to modem. With the zoom 5510 modem, we recommend
installing the drivers cy inserting the CD-Rom
and following the instructions before plugging
in the modem. Full details of this are provided
in the Installation Guide and the CD-ROM you will
receive with the BBUK Broadband Welcome Pack.
If you purchase a modem from elsewhere, there
should also be installation instructions provided. |
|
|
|
| Q: Does it
matter if I install my broadband modem and plug
microfilters in before my BBUK Broadband service
is activated? |
|
| A: No, the microfilters
are only required when you are using the BBUK
Broadband connection and make or receive a standard
telephone call (which could be a voice or fax
call). It is then that the broadband ADSL and
voice signals might interfere with each other
(unless you have microfilters splitting the two).
Therefore you can plug in microfilters and even
install your broadband modem onto your computer
before the BBUK Broadband service is activated
and nothing will change. |
|
|
|
| Q: Does
it matter if my BBUK Broadband service is activated
before I have plugged microfilters into my telephone
sockets? |
|
| A: No, the microfilters
are only required when you are using the BBUK
Broadband connection and make or receive a standard
telephone call (which could be a voice or fax
call). It is then that the broadband ADSL and
voice signals might interfere with each other
(unless you have microfilters splitting the two).
As long as you do not use the BBUK Broadband service
and attempt to make/receive a telephone call at
the same time, you will not notice any problems. |
|
|
|
| Q: I
don't have a telephone socket within 3m of my
computer - what should I do? |
|
| A: The line cord
provided with the BBUK Broadband modem is approximately
3m long. Ideally, you would need to have an extra
socket added to your line nearer to your computer.
If you cannot have a telephone extension point
in this room, you can buy a telephone extension
lead, which connects into another socket but provides
a telephone point near your computer. You will
then need to plug the microfilter into the end
of this extension lead (next to your computer).
Buying a longer line cord for the modem is not
advised as this may lead to reduced quality. |
|
|
|
| Q: Can
I run BBUK Broadband and my dial-up connection
from the same computer, at the same time? |
|
| A: You cannot
be connected to the Internet via BBUK Broadband
at the same time as being connected via a dial-up
connection (this causes a conflict in the computer
memory). However, you may log off from BBUK Broadband
and connect to the Internet via dial-up in the
normal way, providing you have a suitable dial-up
account. |
|
|
|
| Q: Will
I still be able to make telephone calls and/or
send faxes while using the BBUK Broadband service? |
|
| A: Yes, you can
make or receive a standard voice/fax call. You
will need to have microfilters connected. |
|
|
|
| Q: Will
my telephone work even if my computer or modem
is unplugged or disabled? |
|
| A: Yes, it will. |
|
|
|
| Q: Will
other BT services such as Call Waiting still work? |
|
| A: Yes, BT Select
Services such as Call Waiting will still work
on the line BBUK Broadband is provided on. |
|
|
|
| Q: I
have several devices that connect to my computer
via USB (e.g. printer, scanner, new broadband
modem, digital camera). What can I do? |
|
| A: USB hubs are
now readily available from high street stores
and allow you to connect more equipment to your
computer via USB. A USB hub connects into a USB
socket on your computer. You can then plug the
devices into this. |
|
|
|
| Q: Can
I have another telephone extension running from
the microfilter? |
|
| A: Yes, additional
telephone equipment may be connected using an
approved telephone two-way adaptor. |
|
|
|
| Q: Does
it matter where in the house I would like BBUK
Broadband? |
|
| A: You can connect
your broadband modem, via a microfilter, to any
telephone socket on the line enabled for BBUK
Broadband. The connecting line cord provided with
the BBUK Broadband modem is 3m long. This is considered
to be an average length, although cords provided
with modems purchased from other suppliers may
vary in length. |
|
|
|
| Q: Will
multi-linked PCs work with BBUK Broadband? |
|
| A: It is possible,
but you will need to check that your set-up is
configured correctly. BBUK Home 500 Broadband
is sold as a single connection product, so our
Helpdesk facilities will not provide support for
network configurations. |
|
|
|
| Q: During installation
I get a Windows warning that the software is not
Microsoft certified. What does this mean? |
|
| A: MagnaCom has
tested this software for compatibility on all
Windows Operating Systems that are supported.
This is a standard Windows warning. The software
has not been designed to harm your system. |
|
|
|
| Q: Why might I need my
Windows Operating System CD? |
|
| A: Sometimes,
some files that make up the Windows installation
are not installed if they are not needed. If these
files are not detected during the modem installation,
you will be prompted to insert your Windows CD.
Windows will then automatically download the files.
Remove the Windows CD and reinsert the modem installation
CD. The installation will continue from where
it left off. |
|
|
|
| Q: If the service is 'always
on', why do I have to connect and disconnect? |
|
| A: You end an
Internet session by simply exiting your browser.
When you do this, you may see a window 'Auto Disconnect'
- this asks you if you wish to stay connected
or disconnect. Disconnecting simply ends Dial
Up Networking and the Dial Up Networking icon
will disappear from your system tray (bottom right
of your screen). This does not close your BBUK
Broadband 'connection'. It is not necessary to
stay connected (to keep Dial Up Networking active),
however you may wish to, for example to receive
email notification. You can choose to disconnect
Dial Up Networking by right-clicking on the Dial
Up Networking icon and selecting 'Disconnect'.
This will be familiar if you have previously used
dial-up connections via modem - whether analogue
or digital. If you choose to stay connected in
Dial Up Networking you will not need to connect
by clicking on the broadband modem icon in your
system tray. If you do this, and choose Connect
or Dial, you will be informed of your session
status - that you are already logged on. If you
already have Dial Up Networking active (you will
have the Dial Up Networking icon in your system
tray), you will only need to launch your browser
to start an Internet session. |
